The discussion in class today, presented me with a wider view of the use of technology in the classroom. After watching the video clips, I can see how computers can be an effective tool for enhancing instruction, but it also, for me, it raises concern about how affects and effects the learning process. It seems to me that for some students the computer is It. What about experiencing looking up a word in the dictionary? what about experiencing reading a book without the constant stimulus of the flickering screen, and the temptation to surf away?
I guess technology, when properly used, could be a positive tool as I mentioned before. I just wander, what will happen to the child's natural curiosity and creativity? In a way, everything is being given.
I have to say, I feel a little crispy about this class (no the class itself, the machine, and my respond and reaction to it). I do not have much experience with computers, and I'm feeling a bit intimidated and lost. I just need to make peace with it, and learn.
One of the things that the computer can do is allow the student to be a creator of music, literature, etc. They can publish quickly (which can be good or bad) but not have the filter of an "authority" to get your message or idea out.
ReplyDeleteI hope you will be able to find some constructive uses for some of your older students.
I think that this class will allow you to get more comfortable with the computer. Even though children would rather surf the web rather than read a book is true, it's reality and we have to get used to the fact that children of today are much more accustomed to using the computer - so why not have them learn on it. I am for whatever helps a child learn better.
